Vanja Sky is Croatia's answer to Sheryl Crow and Norah Jones. An artistic career could hardly develop any faster. Five years after learning to play the guitar, Vanja recorded her debut album with renowned artists from the international blues scene. A very successful follow-up was quickly released under the title "Woman Named Trouble". Now it's time for the release of her third album "reborn" on the Kick The Flame label and distributed by Broken Silence.
The blues was originally the initial spark for the young confectioner from the small coastal town of Umag. After attending a concert by Croatian guitar hero Denis Makin and his band "The Screaming Wheels", Vanja, who was barely of age, was obsessed with the idea that she had found her true destiny in blues and rock. She first moved to Zagreb to immerse herself in the local music scene. She also got to know the Brit Laurence Jones when he played there. Vanja also played together with guitarist Eduard "Jimmy" Matesic, one of the country's most prominent side artists, in an acoustic duo at concerts all over the country.
Vanja Sky became the discovery and high-flyer of the scene and has long since ceased to be an insider tip. The highlights of her lightning career to date include close collaborations with the likes of Bernard Allison and Mike Zito, as well as her debut album "Bad Penny", recorded at Bessie Blues Studios in Stantonville, Tennessee, the workshop of Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines, followed by the second, much rockier album "Woman Named Trouble", which was selected by ROCKS MAGAZINE as one of the best records released in 2020 alongside releases by AC/DC, Deep Purple, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen!
In 2022, Vanja Sky released a duet with singer Carl Sentance, who is currently on the microphone for probably the most successful Scottish hard rock band Nazareth and Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey's solo band. The title "Müha - See You Again" refers to the transience of life and the appreciation we should develop for what we have in the here and now. Vanja was inspired to write the new song by the unexpected death of a very close friend from the Croatian music scene.
In mid-2023, Vanja released her new album "reborn", which features Gerry McAvoy (Rory Gallagher) and Ric Lee (Ten Years After) as very special guests. For the new album and on all upcoming tours, Vanja is working with the well-known German guitarist Günter Haas, who has recorded albums and toured worldwide with Schiller, Gergorian, Sarah Brightman, Udo Lindenberg, Cindy Lauper, Scotty Moore and many others. With "reborn", Vanja has arrived on the rock scene without losing her roots in the blues. The album is a clear development of her own musical personality. The title "reborn" stands for a new beginning, a rebirth, a fresh start. The album cover features two pictures of Vanja Sky, one from her childhood and another current picture.
The ten songs include eight newly written songs as well as two cover versions of legendary songs from rock history, in which members of the respective original bands took part as special guests. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the title "I'd Love To Change The World", Vanja invited Ric Lee, drummer, Woodstock legend and founding member of Ten Years After, into the studio to re-record the title with him. Vanja now traditionally continues her homage to Rory Gallagher on "reborn". So far, there has been a Rory song on each of her albums. For the new recording of "I Take What I Want", none other than Gerry McAvoy took over the bass part. He played alongside Rory Gallagher for over 20 years.
Vanja Sky soaks up the influence of Rory Gallagher, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan and bridges the gap between the old guard of blues traditionalists and a young audience. She is hardly inferior to the stars of the current classic retro rock scene. She impresses with her haunting original compositions, which are on a par with the hits of the current genre greats. With a vintage sound from the eighties reminiscent of Joan Jett, Vanja sings her songs with the same sharpness and dedication as Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders, but with the necessary toughness whenever necessary.
Vanja has the musical presence to make it big on any stage. From her participation in the "Ruf Blues Caravan" with Bernard Allison and Mike Zito, the result of which has been impressively released on a live CD/DVD, to her own headline tours, joint sessions with Humble Pie guitarist Clem Clempson, Colosseum singer Chris Farlowe and "The God of Hellfire" Arthur Brown, as well as supporting rock legends such as Suzi Quatro, UFO and Woodstock icons Canned Heat, her live performance has evolved. The team of the legendary German television program ROCKPALAST from WDR also became aware of this and broadcast an entire live concert with the exceptional British talent Krissy Matthews as a special guest on guitar.
Vanja Sky is a frequently booked act in front of thousands of visitors at major international festivals such as the Roth Blues Days, Vallemaggia Magic Blues Festival, Fehmarn Festival, Moulin Blues Festival, Megève Blues Festival, Citternova Blues Festival, New Assen Blues Festival, Le Buis Festival and the Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival. Vanja Sky is also one of the most booked bands at international biker festivals such as Hell's Week or the Canta'l Rock Festival in France. An absolute top act that you should not miss!
