TINGVALL TRIO
Live 2025
The Tingvall Trio celebrates its twentieth anniversary in 2023. What is particularly remarkable is that the trio has always played with the same line-up from its foundation to this ninth album, BIRDS. In addition to the pianist and namesake Martin Tingvall on piano, this includes Omar Rodriguez Calvo on double bass and Jürgen Spiegel, who is responsible for drums and percussion. And the three Hamburg-based musicians have managed to write an unparalleled success story over these many years: several ECHO JAZZ Awards as Ensemble and Live Act of the Year, a total of six JAZZ Awards in Gold, two Impala Awards for international sales, a whole series of No.1 Jazz Chart albums and four high placings in the German Top 100 Album Charts - which can certainly be described as outstanding in German jazz. With BIRDS, this development has now reached its climax for the time being.
Martin Tingvall explains the title: “The album BIRDS is dedicated to the birds. They are the musicians of nature. They surround us with their music every day and can be incredibly inspiring. You just have to listen carefully. Unfortunately, we often don't seem to do that anymore, too many other sounds surround us and we get distracted. I hope this album can inspire us to perceive the environment around us differently. I myself can already observe changes in the behavior of birds caused by global warming. SOS, it's high time to stop, listen to nature and take action.”
As always, Martin Tingvall is responsible for all compositions, but the pieces were arranged and played by the trio together in rehearsals and concerts until they were ready for recording. And, of course, the album once again features catchy tunes such as Woodpecker, Hummingbird and Air Guitar. Wonderful ballads such as The Day After, with a bowed double bass by Omar Rodriguez Calvo, alternate with pieces such as Africa, whose lightness of touch is immediately catchy. SOS, the cry for help to finally give our planet a perspective for survival, offers a virtuoso Tingvall Trio sound and a touching composition. Finally, Martin Tingvall contributes a particularly introverted moment with his solo piece Call For Peace.
The trio will present many of the new pieces on an extensive European tour in 2023/24, which is already picking up speed in June with two major festival appearances at the ELBJAZZ Festival in Hamburg and at Nils Landgren's JAZZ BALTICA in Timmendorf. You can check the constantly expanding tour schedule with all dates at www.shop.skiprecords.com.
BIRDS will not only be released in the conventional formats of 180g LP, CD and digital, but to mark the band's twentieth anniversary there will also be two strictly limited deluxe editions in CD and LP format, which will also include a fairly produced cotton bag with the band logo, a tour pass and an opulent 76-page book with rare photo session outtakes, band anecdotes and many facts and photos from twenty years. It is also signed by the trio and will only reach fans worldwide via these 300 CD and 200 LP deluxe boxes.
