RICHARD THOMPSON
Live 2025
presented by Rolling Stone
When asked by a journalist what it was like to be regarded as the best British guitarist for seven decades, ERIC CLAPTON replied: “That's a very good question, but how should I know?
You'll have to ask RICHARD THOMPSON.”
RICHARD THOMPSON is not only one of England's most successful songwriters - his songs have been interpreted by Bonnie Raitt, Robert Plant, Tom Jones, R.E.M., Los Lobos, Paolo Nutini, Rufus Wainwright, David Gilmour, Yo La Tengo, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, The Corrs, Don Henley, David Byrne and the Neville Brothers, to name but a few. But he is also a gifted, virtuoso and unmistakable guitarist as well as a great singer - a real one-off.
He has released around 35 solo albums under his own name. His most recent work, “Ship to Shore”, made it back into the British charts and was also highly praised in Germany, including in “Rolling Stone”.
Not to be forgotten: As a founding member of “Fairport Convention”, Thompson wrote many of the band's most famous songs. He also made a name for himself as the producer of the unforgotten Sandy Denny.
RICHARD THOMPSON has been nominated for several Grammys - including for his numerous soundtracks, such as Werner Herzog's “Grizzly Man”. His song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was included in “Time” magazine's list of the “100 Best Songs since 1923”. He has received numerous awards for his life's work, including the British BBC Awards, the Americana Music Association Award and the Ivor Novello Award.
The Los Angeles Times called him the finest songwriter after Bob Dylan and the best guitarist after Jimi Hendrix. Rolling Stone regularly includes him in its list of the 100 best guitarists of all time.
RICHARD THOMPSON has played with an impressive range of artists - from Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and The Band to Mark Knopfler. His records with his ex-wife Linda Thompson are now considered cultural silverware.
